In 2017, air bag manufacturer Takata was acquired by Joyson Safety Systems.  According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Joyson is currently under investigation due to faulty air bag installations in cushions in approximately 256,181 vehicles. The air bags were folded incorrectly and thus, could fail to deploy in the event of an accident. NHTSA has started an “Open Equipment Query” into these defective air bags installed in the seat cushions of hundreds of thousands of vehicles.  Vehicle owners will be notified of the risk and fix when their research is complete.

NHTSA began its original investigation into defective Takata air bags beginning in 2014 and it was found that Takata knew of the dangers and continued to manufacture and install these defective air bags in models made by Honda/Acura, Ford, Toyota, Fiat Chrysler, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Volkswagen and General Motors despite the dangers. The total number of vehicles impacted by the Takata air bag recall stands at 33.8 million, a staggering total.
